You know you love him

I’ve decided to give some of these “Dear Jack” entries a title, just because the DJ thing is starting to feel redundant and kind of boring.

Anyway, this week, we’ve been staying with Grandma and Grandpa Milby while Hugh went to Minneapolis on business. And since you’ve spent so much time—and enjoyed so many naps—there, I was expecting a smooth transition in the shut-eye department. But alas, I was wrong. Sure, you took a lot of great naps during our stay (which I’m happy to report), but when it came to the evening routine, you were all out of whack. And when you finally went to sleep—after fighting it for nearly an hour—you woke up in the middle of the night and stayed up for another hour. (Thanks to Grandma—otherwise known as my Mom—for helping me get you to sleep, and watching over you while I fed the horses, and just giving me a chance to briefly escape my parenting duties that I love but need a break from every once in a while.)

At first, I just assumed the sleep problem was that you had never spent the night away from home. But then it occurred to me that your Daddy is always the one who takes care of you at night, and ultimately, puts you to bed. So it’s no wonder you had so much trouble sleeping without him around. He’s been there every day of your life, after all, and the two of you have your special activities that you simply won’t do with anyone else without getting pissed.

Luckily, your Dad’s back now and we can all rest easy.
