Spawn of Griffith | The world according to Jackson

The world according to Jackson

This weekend, Jack spent his first restaurant visit in a high chair, rather than strapped into his now-too-small car seat and crammed into the corner of our booth. We were out with Hugh’s parents, Wayne and Louise (who were visiting from Abbotsford, B.C.) and had decided that the local IHOP was the spot for Jack’s upright debut.

To say he had fun would be an understatement of monolithic proportions. He grabbed menus, napkins, and anything else we passed along to keep our little one smiling, rather than screeching. And of course, everything that started in his hands quickly made its way into his mouth, and ultimately onto the floor. Wayne and I found ourselves bookended on either side of Jack’s chair, which meant our meal was spent retrieving laminated cocktail promos and balled up napkins that Jack dropped—no THREW—to the floor nearly every second. But it was still a relief that he didn’t come unhinged, completely, so I’m filing the experience under the “success” column.

Then the really cool first-time-ever happened—we took Jack swimming. The hotel Hugh’s family picked had a small pool, so we decided to introduce Jack to the wonders of aquatic entertainment. And he loved it! We all traded holding him and leading him around—while Wayne snapped lots of pics—and he responded with that look he always gets when he experiences something new: half smile/half wide-eyed wonder. But never any tears.

If there’s one characteristic Jack has in spades, it’s a sense of adventure. Keep it up, little one!
